What is the CS Portal?
- The CS Portal is a web application that allows a student to
- Create a Unix Account
- Create a Class Directory
- Change Unix passwords
What Do You Have to Do at the Start of the Semester?
- In order to do the work for this course, you will need two things
- A Linux account
- A course directory
- With the Linux account to can connect to Linux machines on the CS
Department network
- The course directory is where you will put your work for this course
- When you create a Unix account you will also get a Windows account
with the same password
- You can use the Windows account on any of the Windows machines in
the CS Labs
What If You Already Have a Linux Account?
- You must connect to the CS Portal at the start of the semester ...
- even if you already have a Unix account
- Your Unix account can be used for any class
- But each class needs it's own class directory
- The class directory is where you put your work for the class
- To get a class directory go to
https://portal.cs.umb.edu
and login
- You will then see a list of all CS and IT courses that have class directories
- Select the correct section by clicking on the check box
- Then click Submit
- There may be more than one section for each course ...
- so be sure to click on my section
Creating a Unix Account
- Do not create a new Linux account if you already have one
- To create a Linux account go to
https://portal.cs.umb.edu/register/
- When you do, you should see a page that looks like this
The Username Field
- The first box is for your username
- The username must be no more than 8 characters ...
- and it must start with a letter
- It must be lower case ...
- so do not use capitals
- A good choice for a username is the initial of your first name ...
- followed by your last name
- For example, my username is ghoffman
The UMB Email Field
- Only UMB students should have a Unix account
- To enforce this rule we ask for your UMB email address
The Password Field
- A password must
- Have between 10 and 128 characters
- Have at least 2 uppercase letters
- Have at least 2 lowercase letters
- Have at least 2 digits (0-9)
- Have at least 2 special symbols (!$%#^@&*_+ etc.)
Creating a Class Directory
- After you click the Submit button, an email will be sent to your
UMB email
- It will contain a link
- When you click on this link you will return to the CS Portal
- You will then see a list of all CS and IT courses that have class directories
- Select the correct section by clicking on the check box
- Then click Submit
- There may be more than one section for each course ...
- so be sure to click on my section
Changing Your Password
- To change the password on your account go to
https://portal.cs.umb.edu/password/
- On the left hand side of the screen you will see "Change Password"
- Enter the new password twice and click on the "Change Password"
button

Windows Accounts
- You can also use your Unix account on any CS Department Windows
machines
