The A. Piatt Andrew bridge on Rte 128 leading into Gloucester is slated for
$8.5 million in repairs.
The bridge, which is listed on the State Inventory of Historic Structures
and which spans the Annisquam River, was built in 1950 and greatly impacted
travel to and from Gloucester. Prior to the bridge being built there was
only one road leading into Gloucester and Rockport, namely Rte 127 across
the Blyman bridge, also know as the cut bridge.
In recent years, after a number of suicides, a cyclone fence was added to
the structure. This fencing is very ugly and detracts from the beauty of the
bridge and the magnificent views of the Annisquam River.
Does anybody know of less offensive alternatives to cyclone fencing that
would retain the safety feature?
Thanks
Maggie
