Eastham Historical Society will be installing a basement under our 1869 Schoolhouse Museum, to stop deterioration of the building from moisture. The original structure was built on a footing of granite blocks, many of which are now cracked and chipped and practicably unusable. We would like to consider "veneering" the new concrete foundation with 2 inch thick granite slabs to reproduce the appearance of the original footing blocks. Does anyone have experience with this concept? Or, is there another approach to accomplish this consideration? We assume reproduction with new material would be better than simply letting the 8 inches of new concrete show, ignoring this small bit of architectural fabric? Thanks for any information/ advice you can share!
