I strongly recommend that you get in touch with a stone or architecture
conservator to help you determine what materials and methods would give you the
best result. Ivan Myjer of Building and Monument Conservation in Arlington put
together a conference on the conservation (including cleaning and
stabilization) of brownstone several years ago. I'm sure he would be willing to talk
with you further. His number is 781-641-1603. There are also other
conservators in the area who could help you. The American Institute for Conservation
of Historic and Artistic Works has a list of conservators who have agreed to
abide by their code of ethics and guidelines for practice. You can go to
their website at http://aic.stanford.edu I hope this is helpful to you.
