[MassHistPres] Fire Alarm in Historic House

Our local fire department is asking us to place a bright red "Pull in  
Case of Emergency" box in the front hallway of Sycamores, the 18th C  
historic house we are renovating to become the centerpiece of our  
historic district.  Needless to say this would not be a welcome  
addition to the magnificent interior of this house.

How have other historic districts handled this problem?  I have cited  
a historic town north of here; the fire chief says they are very lax  
in following "the rules."
