SECRETARY GALVIN ANNOUNCES MASSACHUSETTS ARCHAEOLOGY MONTH 2006
Secretary of the Commonwealth William F. Galvin announced last Friday that October is Massachusetts Archaeology Month 2006. Organized by the Massachusetts Historical Commission (MHC) and the State Archaeologist, this 15th annual celebration of archaeology in Massachusetts began in 1991 and features more than 70 events across the Commonwealth that promote awareness of the Commonwealth's rich archaeological past through fun and engaging programs.
"I urge everyone to take part in these events to gain a deeper knowledge of Massachusetts and its archaeological past," said Secretary Galvin, Chairman of the Massachusetts Historical Commission.
Archaeology Month offers a variety of programs for adults, children, parents, and teachers. Programs highlight local history as well as archaeology around the world. Events include lectures, tours, storytelling, exhibits, walks, canoe tours, and demonstrations; and will be held in the following communities: Acton, Andover, Arlington, Belchertown, Boston, Cambridge, Carver, Charlemont, Chesterfield, Concord, Deerfield, Eastham, Grafton, Haverhill, Ipswich, Littleton, Mashpee, Middleborough, Milton, Newburyport, Newton, Norwell, Pittsfield, Plymouth, Shrewsbury, South Hadley, Sturbridge, Springfield, Wayland, Westford, Weston, Westwood, and Worcester. Highlights include: Archaeology Day at Historic Deerfield, A Canoe trip down the Nemasket River in Middleborough, and Massachusetts Atlatl Field Day in Danvers.
The Calendar of Events and Poster for Massachusetts Archaeology Month are available for immediate download at MHC's website (www.sec.state.ma.us/mhc). This year's Archaeology Month calendar and poster feature recent excavations from the African Meeting House (http://www.afroammuseum.org/afmbeaconhill.htm) in Boston. These excavations, conducted by the University of Massachusetts, Boston allowed archaeologists to learn more about the vibrant African-American community that lived on Beacon Hill in the 19th century.
