Does anyone know of a source for galvanized iron pipe handrails?
I have been reviewing a number of old house photos from the Springfield
area, and it seems as though handrails were typically not installed on
front porch steps. However, times have changed, and not only do
homeowners desire handrails, safety code requires it.
I have a 1950's-style lambs-tongue iron railing on my house, but it's
too contemporary for me.
I have seen older photos of steep staircases with iron pipe handrails,
fitted together with what appear to be special joints. In those same
photos I have also seen this installed as low accent fencing in front of
houses.
Does anyone know if this is just your typical galvanized steel piping
that you can pick up at a plumbing store, or if there are specialized
parts for handrails?
Thanks,
