With the advent of the new Building Code, we in Provincetown are trying to
determine what the options will be for window replacement in velocity zones,
which I understand includes most of Cape Cod. I have spoken with the
Shepley/Marvin window people and our local town inspector, and an Anderson
window rep is coming to meet with us next week on this question, but it
would useful to have a definitive answer from someone who is not an industry
representative. My understanding thus far is that window code compliance
will mandate either roll down shutters, permanent brackets to receive
plywood panels which can be installed quickly, or thermal windows with,
among other things, one layer of tempered glass. Many communities may need
to revise their design review guidelines. We, as the preservation
community, need to understand what our options are so we can be consistent
and confident in our dealings with inspectors, contractors and applicants.
I understand that this is driven by insurance companies, but I am also
wondering if there is any lobbying we can do to obtain some relief? Was
anyone from the preservation community involved in the building code
revision process who could speak to that?
