[MassHistPres] wood windows : comment

Just to be clear from the get go - I DO have a biased preference
toward wood and glass window frames and sashes; against vinyl, vinyl
clad, plastic, etc.

my recommendation:

You may check out a broad range of conversation and opinion
by entering "wood windows vs vinyl" in the search engine of your
choice.

If you chose Google, look to the bottom of the first returns
page for the
"Google Groups results for wood windows vs vinyl"
group listing. Quite apart from the broad commercial internet and
the (often obscured vested interest contribution of shill
correspondents in) commercially supported on-line mail lists and
bulletin boards, Google groups are often the decedent correspondence
lists, inherited from DejaView, who adopted them from the wide open
news and usenet system which was being orphaned on the internet.
These older venues often have correspondence that goes back fifteen
or more years; and is archived, maintained, and handily searchable
through the Google interface.

my opinion:

I have found that in some cases referring a householder who
is contemplating window work to the older archives of those news
lists, gives them a wide open perspective on what a large smattering
of folks have to say on the topic, minus a lot of the 'salesman'
vested interest. This happens I believe, because householders want
not to be told what to do and why, they want to learn and understand
why they chose what they chose.
So long as that conversation in the public view can be
monopolized by the short term interest representations of those who
make their livings and invest their p.r. (advertising) efforts in
presenting their "better" solutions, we long term preservation
stewardship advocates are fighting a up hill slog. Hype and volume
are potent persuaders, and they are low investment for quick returns.
Sad.

	Ymmv,	..............niiiiiiiiiiiii
