There is an excellent article in the current (newsstand) issue of Fine
Homebuilding Magazine on making old double hung windows energy efficient.
This link gives you a sense of the article, but the publisher requires a
subscription to read it online:
http://www.taunton.com/finehomebuilding/how-to/articles/renovating-historica
l-double-hung-windows.aspx?ac=ts&ra=fp.
And to the comment made about homeowners looking for objective information
with which to make informed opinions, I couldn't agree more.
In fact, it's surprising that more hasn't been done in this area, such as .
. .
- An engineering firm being commissioned to study and report on the energy
efficiency of different types of windows, including the old windows we love
(perhaps following the recommendations in the Fine Homebuilding article).
- More online resources--While the NPS has done an excellent job making
their technical publications freely available online as PDFs, isn't odd that
many preservation-focused organizations, both private non-profit as well as
government agencies and commissions, sell hard copies of their publications
but don't make electronic copies of them available online?
And while this mailing list is an excellent source of helpful information,
how would others find and search these archives online?
- More seminars--In our local communities, and of course available online as
streaming and archived video tutorials.
