Hamilton Farm in Winchester Slated for Development

Town of Winchester seeking responses from nonprofit groups and developers

for the Request For Proposal

On Nov. 15, 2006 the Town of Winchester received official notice from Avalon
Bay that they had signed a purchase and sale agreement to buy the Farm for
$13.5 million. Because the Farm is registered under a state agricultural
conservation statue (Chapter 61A) the Town of Winchester has

the right to buy the land first. Hamilton Farm is historically

significant - it has

350 years of continuous agriculture usage, remarkable historical farm
buildings, unique ecological importance (abutting a conservation area), and
the iconic pastoral landscape that is unique within the inner suburbs of
Boston.

The Town issued a Request For Proposals (RFP ) on December 29th, 2006 in an
effort to use the development of part of Hamilton Farm to offset the cost of
purchasing the land by the Town. Proposals are due on 29 January, 2007. The
Selectmen hope to present one or more of these proposals to at the Special
Town Meeting when they request authorization to exercise the right of first
refusal.

Who we are: Winchester Hamilton Farm Interest Group (WHFIG) is a diverse
group of people with varying interests in the Farm; we come together around
a desire to keep the land as open as possible and the belief that a
high-density rental development is not the best use of this unique property.
