[MassHistPres] Church Re-Use

In Philadelphia, there is an historic church that is now home to a brew pub. The exterior seems to have been maintained and many of the interior decorations have also been maintained. The building also has an exterior plaque describing its historical significance.

While some may feel that it is sacrilegious, the building has been maintained and was not torn down for some random urban renewal project.

I am wondering if people feel that churches that are also architectural gems should be protected from removal of their exterior ornamentation during
re-use. We have a situation where one congregation has decided on their own to
remove statues from the exterior in a most aggregious way. We tried to have
this church designated historic, but the archdiocese refused.
