TOPIC: Inspiration Through Art: The Facts about Stained Glass Restoration
Sister Sally McLaughlin from St. Peter's Church in Dorchester reflected
recently in a grant proposal "In addition to being a major beautification
project in a neighborhood long neglected by art institutions, [restoring the
stained glass windows] will provide a dramatic incentive to current and
former members of the parish to restore this important architectural,
cultural and religious institution." HBI could not agree more. The stained
glass in a religious property speaks to the legacy of its past parishioners,
inspires community pride, and are important historic artistic and
architectural elements.
However, the care and maintenance of these majestic pieces of art can be
confusing and daunting. Our speaker, Julie Sloan, will lead participants
through an account of stained-glass history and a hands-on explanation of
the important details of stained-glass restoration.
SPEAKER: Julie L. Sloan, Stained-glass Consultant
Julie L. Sloan is a stained-glass consultant in North Adams, MA. She has
worked in stained glass since 1982 and is the author of Conservation of
Stained Glass in America and many articles on stained glass history and
conservation. She was adjunct professor of historic preservation at
Columbia University, where she has taught stained glass restoration from
1985 until 1997. She was also adjunct professor at Salve Regina University
in Newport, RI for Fall 2004, for The History of Stained Glass in America.
Her BA in art history is from New York University and her MS in historic
preservation is from Columbia University.
Her conservation projects include H. H. Richardson's Trinity Church in
Boston, Harvard University's Memorial Hall, Princeton University's Chapel,
and the State Houses of Massachusetts, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania. Her
conservation and research projects have won many awards, including grants
from the National Endowment for the Arts, the Samuel Kress Foundation, the
Graham Foundation for Advancement in the Arts, and the Arts & Crafts Fund.
SPONSOR: Historic Boston Incorporated
Historic Boston Incorporated's Steeples Project is an innovative program
aimed at strengthening inner-city neighborhoods by preserving endangered
historic houses of worship that for generations have anchored them. From
its founding in 1960, HBI has preserved pivotal historic buildings as a way
to stimulate reinvestment and catalyze neighborhood renewal. Since 1993,
the Steeples Project has continued that effort. This program is open to
congregations of all faiths, and is in no way limited to the preservation of
steeples, but instead promotes a holistic, long-term planning approach to
building use, maintenance, and preservation of historic religious
properties.
The end goal of the Steeples Project is to promote healthy neighborhoods by
empowering congregations to become thoughtful stewards of their buildings
that serve as such important community resources.
We look forward to seeing you at this workshop and we extend the invitation
also to members of your building and fundraising committees. Please RSVP by
Oct 29, so we can be sure to have appropriate accommodations. As always, the
program is free and refreshments will be provided.
