Having read a recent thread containing several posts regarding “house  
plaques,” New England Historical Markings (NEHM) specializes in  
assisting historical commissions with establishing their programs.   
Our experience has shown that such programs promote and enhance a  
community’s awareness as to both their historical significance and  
architecture.  Every so often, we will receive an inquiry regarding  
the accuracy of a date or name on a plaque and as a result, further  
research and vetting will result in unexpected twists that help to  
correct the records.

There is something to be said for preserving the simplicity of an  
historical structure absent of any signage, but given an attractive  
design, color, and informative content, plaques can enhance the  
structure’s appearance while providing a fascinating historical  
roadmap for public consumption.
