Marcia, We in Dartmouth are working on this now. Our ca 1871
Schoolhouse/Library in Russells Mills Village (40C district) could have been
put up for sale. Instead we organized a community meeting and a follow up
meeting and the outcome was that we would try to pursue a lease arrangement
through a RFP process. The advantage we have with this building is that it
is town-owned and is a contributing structure to the local historic
district. The question will be is there an entity out there that is willing
to lease it for purposes that reflect the highest and best use of the
historic village where it is situated. It¹s important to determine how many
restrictions you want to impose to protect the integrity of the building and
walking that fine line with a buyer who may have other ideas. The stronger
the HPR, the better for the future of the building.

Good luck! We¹ll stay in touch. Regards, Diane Gilbert, Dartmouth Select
Board and Dartmouth Heritage Preservation Trust President.
