Although the wood today isn't of the same quality as the past, my experience has been that improper installation and lack of maintenance has been more of an issue. In this case you do get what you pay for and you should seek out a contractor that stands behind his work.
There are companies that manufacture wood gutters in Cedar that also have matching raking moldings. J. P. Moriarity (spelling) in Somerville is one that comes to mind. Additionally you can have existing wood gutters (or new ones) lined with copper or have copper ones made to closely match almost any profile. If you contact me, I can direct you to a local company.
