shutters are in a class of their own as far as repair/restoration...they offer a unique challenge as there are so many hard to reach areas that may require paint removal, wood replacement or epoxy repairs...for this reason, i think folks use the 'dipping' method which, in my opinion, may result in a future break down of paint and repairs...some methods are more/less caustic than others...painting typically requires a spray operation as it is difficult to achieve a no-drip quality finish with a paint brush...
you may want to ask the woodworkers in arlington if they could handle restoration...true preservation calls for saving original material whereever possible...
good luck!

Subject: [MassHistPres] Shutters
Hi–
I am somewhat new to preservation, but have been interested in
historic homes for many years. My own home is a small Greek Revival
built in 1846 here in Woburn. The shutters are original and we had to
replace two on the front of the house in 2002 because they were so
badly deteriorated. We used a company in Arlington to replicate the
original shutters and they did excellent work. You have to look
closely to realize that there are new shutters on the house. The
windows are 6 over 9 (I'm not sure about the terminology, but they
are floor to ceiling windows). Some of the shutters that are left are
not too badly deteriorated. In terms of a historic home—should we
attempt to repair those shutters that are left or should we replace
them all? If it would be better to repair some of them, does anyone
have the name of someone to do the work? And finally, if we decide to
replace them, is there a group or person who would like the original
shutters?
Thanks,
Carol Seitz
