One of the best gutter applications that I've seen (and installed) is a wood
gutter with a copper liner. Installed properly (i.e. seams properly
soldered, expansion joints installed between downspouts and installing the
liner from the front edge of the gutter through the trough and up onto the
roof sheathing) the copper can last more than 100 years and provide the
exact esthetic as a wood gutter that will require maintenance multiple times
per year.

Top that off with the knowledge that once the copper fails it can be
recycled. Additionally, if the eventual failure of the copper is caught in
time, the original gutter (at that point being better than 100 years old)
can be again lined with copper for an expected life span of an additional
100 + - years!

Check out the Mass Audubon's Habitat main building in Belmont. It has a
copper liner that appears to be original and (as I recall) around 100 - 110
years old at this point.

Any economists out there want to venture what the costs savings are of this
installation vs one that has to be replaced every 30 or 40 years?

Thank you,

Garrett
