WEST CEMETERY HEADSTONE RESTORATION
Request for Proposals
The Town of Amherst requests proposals from qualified firms for
conservation and restoration services on no fewer than 244 historic
headstones in the oldest sections of the Town of Amherst's historic West
Cemetery. Established in 1730, West Cemetery is Amherst's oldest
burying ground. The most common headstone materials are granite,
schist, sandstone, marble, and slate and the majority of restoration
needs involve tilting, breaking below base, fracturing and delaminating.
The scope of required services will include condition assessment,
documentation of current conditions, conservation, restoration, and
recording of treatments undertaken on the headstones.
Consultants submitting proposals are expected to conduct a field
assessment and to propose to conserve/restore a specific number of
headstones above 244 in their proposals. Complete proposals must be
received no later than 12:00 noon, Friday, April 25, 2008. The project
is to be completed within 13 months of contract signing. RFP packages
may be obtained from Jonathan Tucker, Planning Director, Amherst
Planning Department, Town Hall, 4 Boltwood Avenue, Amherst,
Massachusetts, 01002. For further information call (413) 259-3040 or
