Wow, judging from the number of replies it must have been a slow afternoon all across Massachusetts.
The Cambridge Historical Commission's "Entering Historic District" signs were manufactured in 1992 by the Vulcan Sign Company of Foley, Alabama, at a cost of $3.15 each. This price was obtained through the usual competitive public bidding process. We ordered four different legends, in quantities of 8 to 30 for a total of 83 signs.
To obtain this price, we specified standard highway sign materials, including 9" by 12" aluminum sign blanks (drilled for mounting on standard poles) and Scotchlite reflective faces. We supplied camera-ready mechanical art, which was prepared for us by a graphic designer at a cost of $250. The signs were put up for us by the Cambridge Traffic & Parking Department crews using standard hardware on existing poles.
The signs are located at the boundaries of the four Cambridge historic districts and neighborhood conservation districts. Because of the large number of streets entering our districts, only those designated by the Traffic Department as emergency arteries are posted.
These signs attracted favorable comments when they first went up. Because of their graphic design (white letters on a solid blue background) they cannot be confused with traffic signs. They serve not only to educate the public, but also to provide legal notice to those who might claim that they were not aware that their property is in a designated area. They are also amazingly durable, and don't seem to have weathered at all.

Subject: [MassHistPres] Entering Historic District Signs
Bedford is wondering how many nearby towns have posted "Entering/Leaving the Historic District" signs - comments pro or con?
