Powder post beetle have done considerable damage to a few beams in a house
that dates to 1688. The beams support the first floor; the cellar floor is
dirt.

We've had the affected beams treated to kill the beetles, and were told that
to reduce the likelihood of future problems, we need to reduce the moisture
in the basement. Two approaches were recommended: Running a dehumidifier
(draining into a sump pump) or spreading thick plastic over the dirt floor.

If you've dealt with this problem, I'd be interested in approaches that
you've found successful.

Thanks for your help--

Lee
