Lee,Moisture in the air of a basement comes from many sources. It could be just water vapor in the air (humidity), that condenses in a cool basement. A dehumidifier is a good tool for reducing that.It likely comes from other sources, too, namely ground water and precipitation. Rain and melting snow can enter a basement through leaks in the roof or walls, or from roof runoff that seeps through the foundation. Water can be directed away from a foundation by gutters, downspouts, and pipe or cement grade level diverters. If the ground slopes toward a building, the water is also more likely to seep into the basement. Grade changes and drain pipes can divert it away from building.Water that is already in the ground can also seep into basement. Plastic sheet on the dirt floor can help a bit. A drainage system (perforated pipe that lets water in and directs it to an outflow opening or sump pump) can also be installed either outside or inside around the perimeter of basement. This is a big job but can be very effective and invisible (except for temporary landscape disruption if it goes outside, or for the sump if it's inside). Basement waterproofing companies can dig in drain pipes, if you find one who can be careful of historic structure. Hydraulic cement can be used to patch concrete cracks that let in water. Usually water in an old basement/cellar needs to be addressed at all possible sources.
