Dennis,
An Italianate style house designed by Worcester architect Elbridge Boyden
that once stood at 12 State Street, corner of Harvard Street, Worcester, had a
circular cast iron staircase. I can't find the date of the house right now,
but am pretty sure that it was pre-1860. According to my notes, the iron
stair was located in the kitchen. I have a fuzzy color slide of it taken in
1983. Boyden used cast iron in his buildings in the early 1850's and is
believed to have built the first building with a cast iron front in New England in
Worcester (the Foster Block, Main and Pearl streets, no longer standing)
during that period.

We are researching the very earliest iron staircases in New England.
We would be interested in knowing about any surviving or well
documented and illustrated pre-1860 New England examples (other than
the 1848 Brookline Gatehouse and the Boston Athenaeum examples).
