There's also information online about Crime Prevention Through  
Environmental Design (or CPTED) that might be helpful.  CPTED  
principals came out of collaboration between law enforcement and  
planners, and they run the gamut from conceptual (increase  
opportunities for "natural surveillance") to things like putting the  
hinges on the inside of doors rather than the outside.
