This is response to the Kristi's original query rather than the relining approach. Jerry Eide of Hilltown Preservation is an expert mason for this kind of work. He is based out of Wendell, MA. He rebuilt the chimney at the Blake House, a first period house in Boston.

Assuming this is a functional chimney and the "crumbling is on the interior flue of the chimney (as opposed to the weather face of the brick) have they investigated relining the chimney? There are various methods for this - balloon forms, stainless liners, lowering clay chimney liner from above. A 1783 chimney probably has large flue with ample space for relining.

Also, by feather jointed clapboards I assume you mean individual clapboards with a scarf joint wherever two claps meet. If you mean "finger - jointed" please tell your homeowners not to waste their money on "FJ" claps - they simply won't last.

Two homeowners of one of our earlier houses have been told by a mason that they need to rebuild their 1783 chimney. He has told them that they need to replace the bricks because they are crumbling. Does anyone have the names of masons familiar with this age of structure and who wouldn't break my homeowner's bank? Does anyone have a source for period appropriate bricks to replace those that cannot be reused?

They are also reroofing and doing other extensive repairs to the exterior including feather-jointed clapboard. Cost containment is a real issue for them.

    Thanks as always,
