[MassHistPres] industrial type smokestacks

One of the more recent of these stacks is indeed the kind of landmark
Jonathan describes. In the late 1980s my husband was involved with
Independent Energy Corp. in the construction of one of the first
co-generation power plants that harnessed the steam system of the city of
Hartford to generate electricity, the Capitol District Energy Center. The
architect, (I believe it was Jack Dollard), proposed painting the tall brick
vent stack blue, with clouds, and putting a model airplane on top. The
client didn't agree to that, but the idea of showcasing it was appealing,
and the result was a paint scheme of bright orange, yellow, and white
stripes.
The paint is a bit faded after 20 years, but the stack is still a highlight
of the Hartford skyline. It's close to the east side of I-84, so give it a
wave the next time you are driving through!
