This e-newsletter from the Massachusetts Historical Commission
Preservation Planning Division has been prepared for local historical
commissions, historic district commissions and others interested in
historic preservation activities around the Commonwealth of
Massachusetts. It is published roughly every other week. If you have

NEWS AT THE MASSACHUSETTS HISTORICAL COMMISSION
MHC ON THE ROAD WORKSHOPS
The next MHC workshop for local commissions is on Demolition Delay
Bylaws. The workshop is primarily for local historical commission
members interested in establishing a demolition delay bylaw in their
community. However, anyone interested in understanding the basics of a
demolition delay bylaw is welcome to attend. The workshop covers the
advantages of demolition delay bylaws, the different types of demolition
delay bylaws found in Massachusetts, the typical steps in a demolition
delay bylaw and success stories with demolition delay from around the
state. It is scheduled for Thursday, March 5, 2009 in the town of
Greenfield and is hosted by the Franklin Regional Council of Governments
and the Pioneer Valley Planning Commission. If you would like to

DHCD WORKSHOP ON DOWNTOWN DEVELOPMENT
The Department of Housing & Community Development and the Massachusetts
Downtown Initiative are offering a workshop on State Resources for
Downtown Commercial & Mixed-Use Development on Thursday, February 26,
2009. The workshop will assist communities in understanding the range
of available state resources to support local downtown revitalization
efforts and how to more effectively utilize these resources to
effectuate change. Following the presentations, communities can have
individual meetings with program staff to discuss how state resources
might be used for specific projects. Programs covered will include
Chapter 43D Expedited Permitting, Community Development Action Grant
(CDAG), Community Development Block Grants (CDBG), District Increment
Financing (DIF), Economic Development Fund (EDF), Historic Tax Credit
Program, MA Opportunity Relocation & Expansion Program (MORE), Peer to
Peer Program, Public Works Economic Development (PWED), Smart Growth
Zoning Overlay District (40R), Transit Oriented District (TOD), Urban
Center Housing Tax Increment Housing (UCH-TIF) and Urban Renewal (UR).

GRANTS
SAVE OUR HISTORY GRANT PROGRAM
The Save Our History Grant Program provides funding to history
organizations that partner with schools on a local community
preservation project. During the 2009/2010 school year, History will
award grants of up to $10,000 to historical organizations to fund
hands-on, experiential educational projects that teach students about
their local history and actively engage them in its preservation. For
