[MassHistPres] Signs as protection for historic resources

Is anyone aware of any studies, academic or professional, that
demonstrate the 'protective' impact that historic identification and
interpretive signs provide for historic sites, buildings, and resources?
Not anecdotal information or presumptive intuition (we can do those
ourselves), but actual emperical studies.

Or any good ideas on where to look for same?
