Jonathan, the NPS Harper's Ferry Interpretive Center is the best
clearinghouse for that sort of information. They should be able to steer
you in the right direction.

Is anyone aware of any studies, academic or professional, that
demonstrate the 'protective' impact that historic identification and
interpretive signs provide for historic sites, buildings, and resources?
Not anecdotal information or presumptive intuition (we can do those
ourselves), but actual emperical studies.

Or any good ideas on where to look for same?

We have placed large granite stones with the number assigned by the MHC
on the stone at each cemetery we have found in Westport (or inscribed
them on a stone wall). Many of these are on undeveloped land away from
the eye of the public in woods or fields. We think these "signs" serve
to protect the cemetery in that "developers" know that the town knows a
cemetery is there. We also have put this information on the planning
board's computers and on the GIS.
So if the cemetery "disappears" the developer is certainly in more
trouble than he would have been otherwise. We did not use normal
signage because people would have balked at having such a sign on their
property especially if they could see it. Also it is hard to "break"
the large stone or carry it away!

I personally have not seen any studies done on the protective aspect of
signage.

Just saw the February 19 announcement (below) of the $40,000 grant the
state
received. While I realize that it came from the IMLS, I thought that it
might be of interest to many on this list.

Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners - Boston, MA
Award Amount: $40,000

Project Title: "Developing and Expanded and Enhanced Statewide
Preservation
Program for Massachusetts' Cultural Heritage"
The Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners, along with its seven
partners, will use its grant to hire a consultant to develop,
administer,
and analyze a survey directed at the cultural heritage institutions in
the
state. The results of this new survey will be compared with data from a
1989
preservation needs assessment survey and the Heritage Health Index to
determine progress that has been made in addressing previously noted
needs
and to identify new areas of concern for future action. This intensive
survey will allow Massachusetts to prioritize and develop a plan of
action
to address current preservation needs across the state.
