We are looking for a recommendation for a home inspector with
preservation credentials and experience to give a detailed estimate for
the restoration of a Civil War-era farmhouse and barn in the Sherborn
Local Historic District which the town has contracted to purchase. The
Selectmen would like to sell the buildings for removal from the site or,
alternatively, to demolish them, retaining the land, which abuts the Town
Hall. The HDC and the Historical Commission were hoping that Town
Meeting would see the value of re-purposing the house or reselling it as
a residence with the minimum required acreage and keeping the remainder
of the land. However we lost the vote due in large part to voters' fear
of the costs involved based on a high repair estimate by a random
contractor at the request of a Selectman-appointed study committee which
recommended demolition. As the HDC has been saying publically for a year
that it is unlikely that they would approve demolition, the matter is
unresolved.

We have the Preservationmass contractor list but are looking for guidance
from any of you who have used an inspector you believe has the
experience and credentials to provide an unbiased, practical approach to
renovating a house of this period.
Thanks.
