*SATURDAY, JULY 25 & SUNDAY, JULY 26, 2009

**Historic Places - Modern Living: A Landscape Design Workshop*
*with Melissa Mourkas ’94, ASLA*

This intensive two-day workshop will explore how to integrate historic
resources into our modern lives and will include a visit to and design
exploration of the landscape of a Frank Lloyd Wright-designed Usonian home.
The Theodore Baird House in Amherst, Massachusetts, is an early Usonian Home
designed by Frank Lloyd Wright in 1940. It is listed on the National
Register of Historic Places. The siting of the house at the top of a knoll
to take in long views, the south-facing wall of glass, built-in terraces and
oblique arrival sequence are common traits of many Usonian houses.

The workshop will also explore how to adapt historic places for modern
living. Using the Frank Lloyd Wright-designed Usonian home and its landscape
as our canvas, we will explore how to add landscape and architectural
elements to this National Historic Register site while still meeting the
Standards.

This workshop will introduce participants to the Secretary of the Interior's
standards for historic preservation, with an emphasis on rehabilitation
standards and historic landscapes. Building upon these concepts, the
workshop will explore case studies where the landscape is an integral part
of the historic site. A visual tour of historic landscapes from all across
America will provide the tangible support for the concepts.

No prerequisites. Open to all.

*FEE:* $275 before July 1, $300 after July 1.
