[MassHistPres] Fw: Protect the Historic Preservation Fund -- Take Action Today!

I just tried to get email addresses for all the reps and when I used the form within Capuano's site, I was rejected because I'm not in his district. So I addressed an envelope, but it may not get to his office in time.

I'm in Markey's district so I did successfully send that email, with the statement that no one from Mass had signed. Maybe his office would contact the other Mass reps, but I kinda doubt it.

Why can't we easily write to any/every state rep when something involves all the state?

Hello,

It appears that no Massachusetts legislator has signed on to this bill. Can we help?

BACKGROUND:

The Historic Preservation Fund (HPF) is the nation's oldest and most comprehensive source of public funding for historic preservation. Now more than ever, as states face unprecedented budget cuts and additional responsibilities as a result of stimulus projects, adequate federal funding for the HPF is greatly needed.

HPF programs include:

 *   State Historic Preservation Officers (SHPOs) who administer the national historic preservation program at the state level by making nominations to the National Register, providing funds and technical assistance for preservation activities, and reviewing all federal projects for their impact on historic properties;
 *   Tribal Historic Preservation Officers (THPOs) who play the same role as a SHPO for their tribes;
 * Save America's Treasures (SAT), a national public-private partnership to protect the country's threatened cultural treasures that document and illuminate the history and culture of the United States; and
 * Preserve America, an initiative that supports community efforts to preserve and enjoy our cultural and natural heritage.

Congressional Historic Preservation Caucus Co-Chairs Representatives Russ Carnahan (D-MO) and Mike Turner (R-OH) have teamed together to encourage Members of Congress to join them in signing a letter to the Chairman Norm Dicks (D-WA) and Ranking Member Mike Simpson (R-ID) of the House Appropriations Interior Subcommittee requesting increased funding for the HPF. Specifically, for Fiscal Year 2010, the letter requests $55 million for SHPOs, including $5 million for records digitization, in addition to $20 million for THPOs, $30 million for Save America's Treasures and $10 million for Preserve America.

The deadline for Members of Congress to sign the group letter to appropriators is Thursday, April 2, 2009. It is imperative that the letter include as many Representatives as possible so appropriators will understand how important it is to fully fund the HPF.

WHAT YOU CAN DO:
