A Jewel in the Crown: the West Branch Library is the title of the upcoming
talk by Sara B. Chase at the West Branch Library this coming Sunday, May
17th from 3-4PM. Please join Historic Somerville and the Somerville
Libraries in celebration of the 100th anniversary of the first Carnegie Library in
Somerville. The talk will take place at the library, with a tour and
refreshments to follow.
In 2003, Chase and her colleagues investigated the possible historic
restoration of the interior of the library. The scheme they found more
closely fits the cozy study of a Sherlock Holmes than a public institution of
today. Could such a library work for you? Sara's talk will explore the facts
and fantasies of restoring the interior of the library.
Chase, an architecture conservator, received her MA in preservation
studies from BU in 1977 and is renowned throughout the country as a consultant
on the history and use of historic paints, finishes, and wallpapers.
The West Branch Library is located at 50 College Avenue near Davis
Square in Somerville, MA. It is easily accessible by T. Although
reservations are not required, it would be helpful. Please email
admin at historicsomerville.org to reserve your seat.
