 A Jewel in the Crown: the West Branch Library is the title of the upcoming 
talk by Sara B. Chase at the West Branch Library this coming Sunday, May 
17th from 3-4PM.   Please join Historic Somerville and the Somerville 
Libraries in celebration of the 100th anniversary of the first   Carnegie Library in 
Somerville.   The talk will take place at the library, with a tour and 
refreshments to follow.
     In 2003, Chase and her colleagues investigated the possible historic 
restoration of the interior of the library.   The scheme they found more 
closely fits the cozy study of a Sherlock Holmes than a public institution of 
today.   Could such a library work for you? Sara's talk will explore the facts 
and fantasies of restoring the interior of the library.
     Chase, an architecture conservator, received her MA in preservation 
studies from BU in 1977 and is renowned throughout the country as a consultant 
on the history and use of historic paints, finishes, and wallpapers. 
     The West Branch Library is located at 50 College Avenue near Davis 
Square in Somerville, MA.   It is easily accessible by T.   Although 
reservations are not required, it would be helpful.   Please email
