Changing Appearance of the American Diner" 

Larry   Cultrera, diner aficionado,   will present his talk at the 
Somerville Museum, One Westwood Road, Somerville, 02143 on Thursday, June=
 4th from 
7-8PM as part of Historic Somerville's 2009 lecture series.   Tickets are=
 $8; 
members of Historic Somerville: $5 .    A reception will follow.   There=
 is 
limited seating, so please reserve your seat in advance by emailing

Cultrera is an archivist of the American Roadside, specializing in 
documenting the American Diner through his photographs.   He is a long-tim=
e member 
of the Society for Commercial Archaeology (SCA) and writes the Diner Hotli=
ne 
Weblog (http://dinerhotline.wordpress.com).   This is a continuation of a=
 
column he penned for the SCA's Journal Magazine for over 18 years.   He ha=
s 
been researching these truly unique American restaurants and their history=
 
since 1980 and has photo-documented over 800 of them as well as having ama=
ssed 
a large collection of memorabilia.   Cultrera has been featured on various=
 
TV shows, such as CBS Sunday Morning with Charled Kuralt, Bob Elliot prese=
nts 
New England Diners (WDSH - Chan.6, Portland, ME) and WCVB TV's Chronicle.=
 
He has been interviewed for numerous newspaper and magazine articles rangi=
ng 
from the Boston Globe, the Syracuse Post Standard, the Portland Press 
Herald, Smithsonian Magazine, Insight Magazine and Yankee Magazine.   His=
 slide 
presentation covers the history of diners from 1872 to the present, primar=
ily 
focusing on the evolution of styles and changes in the manufacturing of 
diners.   The last part of the presentation will feature local diners from=
 past 
to the present.
