The Massachusetts Archives Architectural Plans workshop posted to this
listserv last Friday and scheduled for Tuesday, February 8, 2011 is now
fully booked. If you missed responding to this, a second session is now
being offered on Tuesday, February 15 at 9:00 AM. The workshop again
will be limited to 10 people, and pre-registration is required. Email
or call Autumn Haag, Reference Archivist, if you would like to reserve a
space in the February 15th workshop, or if you have any questions. The
workshop will cover the depth and breadth of the Archives collection of
over 60,000 architectural plans. Archives staff will discuss the types
of plans researchers are likely to find in the Archives, the kinds of
information available from the plans, as well as why the Archives has
these plans. Archives staff will also cover all aspects of requesting to
view the records and having them sent out for reproduction. A variety of
plans will be pulled from the vault and looked at during the workshop.

As I wrote in the earlier posting, if you are not familiar with the
Massachusetts Division of Inspection, Building Inspection Plans
collection at the Massachusetts Archives, this really is a great
opportunity for an introduction. Beginning in 1888, the Division of
Inspection was responsible for reviewing and approving plans for
construction and renovation of buildings allowing public access,
including hospitals, hotels and boarding houses, office buildings,
theaters, churches, schools, etc., etc. It's an extraordinary resource,
both for information on buildings still standing, and as a record of a
vast realm of disappeared Massachusetts architecture.
