Matt - I agree and understand. It is very frustrating that you were unable
to save the Quonset hut in Hamilton. I am not a historic preservationist,
but I think people are writing with their "sightings" not out of ignorance
or insensitivity to your situation, but more in response to it. Your
dilemma raised the question of the historic significance of these
structures, and is that not the silver lining of your loss? Here in
Dartmouth we lost a lovely and ecologically significant piece of land in
1971, which inspired the creation of this land trust. Almost 40 years later
we have preserved over 2000 acres in town (over 4000 acres in total of
protected land) with the help and support of the entire community. There's
got to be a lesson in these events, no?
Sure maybe some or most of the huts people are writing in about don't rank
with yours, I don't know, I am not an expert or even an aficionado, but
maybe there is a gem squatting somewhere that no one has noticed that now
maybe they will. Is that too far fetched?

We asked for help to save a very unique Quonset hut in Hamilton that was
likely the last untouched example of one from a post-war veteran village.
Instead of sound advice or good leads to sources of funding, we have been
inundated with e-mail from the Quonset hut spotters club of America. Sure
there are other huts around. I know of three in nearby towns but they have
all been gutted for commercial storage, heavily modified or seriously
neglected. What we had in Hamilton couldn't be found anywhere else. So
many people just didn't seem to get that despite repeated explanations in
the newspapers and on Youtube.

There is one in Mattapoisett on the west side of North Street north of Rt.
195 - I do not know its provenance.

There is a quonset hut located behind the Maynard Country Club clubhouse off
Route 27 (50 Brown Street) and is currently in use as an equipment shed. We
also had one - at the former rotary, now the intersection of Rt. 117 and Rt.
27 - that was used as a clubhouse for the local Will Dodd Boys and Girls
Club but it was replaced by a permanent brick building many years ago.
