We also have seen brick nogging in a couple of our late 18th Century
properties. I heard that it was used to help control the spread of
fires as well as insulation. I haven't found anything in my readings to
confirm this so I too would like to know more about nogging.

Subject: [MassHistPres] purpose brick nogging

Hello Preservation listers,

A question from one of our historic house owners re: his home built in
2nd quarter 18th c. He's found rough brick nogging throughout, and
wondered if it was a form of insulation, or perhaps reinforcing to
protect from attacks?

Your collective wisdom eagerly awaited...
