Installations should meet the Secretary of the Interior Standards for Rehabilitation.
Every proposed installation should be considered and reviewed on a case by case basis.
Solar panels should be placed in locations that minimize visibility from the public right of way.
Installations should be reversible.
When solar panels are located on a building, significant character defining features should not be removed, covered or altered.
Installation of solar panels on the roof of the primary façade is not encouraged.
Other options should be considered such as the following:
Installation on rear ells, subordinate wings, secondary massings or on accessory outbuildings.
Installation of the array on a free standing structure at ground level.
Only when other options have been explored, should installation on the main façade be considered.
Installation on the roof of the main façade should be placed to the rear.
Installation should consider the proportions, balance and scale to determine the least intrusive location.

Subject: [MassHistPres] Solar panels in a local historic district
Have any LHDs written regulations concerning placement of solar panels in a local historic district?
Have any LHDs allowed solar panels in a LHD?
Any other comments that you might think relevant for an LHD to consider would be much appreciated.

Westport
