[MassHistPres] Mass Code reference

I recall having seen in previous posts about windows some discussion regarding the specific mention within the MA codes that allow the owner of an historic property to replace windows with historically appropriate single glazed windows and a storm to meet the energy efficiency requirements. However, I've been unable to find it in the archives and my e-mails to Mass Historic Council have all bounced back. Can anybody point me to that reference?

I'm preparing to replace a house (circa 1760) full of horrendous cheap vinyl windows complete with failed seals (Ralph Slate got photos from me for a brochure he was trying to create in support of appropriate historic windows instead of vinyl!) with some good quality wood single pane windows and wood exterior storms. My contractor is nervous though about getting the permit if the windows don't stringently meet energy codes.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

BTW - If anybody wants to know what manufacturer I'm using, shoot me an e-mail off list since I'm seeing posts that say that pushing a business on list is considered bad form. Although I'd love to use a custom fabricated fully historic restoration window with weights and cords and all, I can't afford to go full restoration for a house I'm prepping to sell. This manufacturer provides excellent quality, for a manufactured window, at better prices than big name competitors... and locally made for LEED points too. I can provide you with a cost comparison to comparable big name double glazed wood windows as well as vinyl or vinyl clad.
