Mr. Hartmann,
Thank you for sharing. I often do the same with areal overlays and old maps.
To clarify, while the historical maps are great on Mass GIS,
I am looking for the designation of historical sites and boundaries of districts. The historic data layer has been removed from Mass GIS, until it is updated.
Importing the GIS layer into a drawing program, would help clearly determine the boundaries of districts. For example, see attached from DCR.
I understand this data is constantly being updated.

But I have had some success scanning Sandborn Maps as pictures in a tif format and georeferencing it (a relatively simple GIS process) to fit our current GIS data. Attached is an example. Anyone with ARCMap can do it. You also need maps in some computer file format or the ability to scan a hard copy. I reduced the resolution for email purposes. We have also scanned 1947 aerials and georeferenced them.
