The local Cape Cod town of Dennis has had to think about this in connection with the Old Kings Highway Historic District along route 6A. You can access some of their research at the following link - http://dennismaplanningdept.wordpress.com/2009/04/25/historic-preservation-and-alternative-energy/ it includes a list of articles accessible via click.

Subject: [MassHistPres] solar panels in the historic district
Have any of you had experience with applications for solar panels for South-facing roofs in an historic district?
Have any regulations on solar panels been written?
Are there suggested types of solar panels that are more easily approved?
Thank you.
