Grafton Historical Society Hosts Civil War Anniversary Program on Sunday, April 3rd

GRAFTON: Observing the 150th Anniversary of the American Civil War, the Grafton Historical Society will host an exhibit and program on Sunday afternoon, April 3rd, 2011 at 2:00 PM at the Historical Society Museum, One Grafton Common in Grafton. The exhibit features Civil War era artifacts organized by the Grand Army of the Republic (G.A.R.) Memorial Board of Trustees. The center piece of the exhibit is one of four Confederate flags, captured on March 14, 1862 at the battle of New Bern, North Carolina and brought back to Worcester as trophies of war. The exhibit will be on display at the Grafton Historical Society museum through April 25th. It will then continue on to the Worcester Public Library and Worcester Senior Center over the next two months.

As part of the exhibit's opening day on April 3rd, G.A.R. Board Chairperson Daniel McAuliffe will give a talk entitled, “The Burnside Expedition, from Worcester County to New Bern, North Carolina.” It will follow two Worcester County regiments from the time they leave the city to the capture of the flags, and the triumphs and hardships endured by these men. There will also be a one day only exhibit of an original copy of the Thirteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution, making all men free.

The G. A. R. Board is a part of the City of Worcester’s Boards and Commissions, and consists of five members who volunteer their time to oversee the safety and preservation of the historic artifacts left behind by the veterans of the American Civil War. For additional information, contact Daniel McAuliffe at 508-852-5619, or email at danmc62 at verizon.net.
