Get outside and explore Boston with two Boston Preservation Alliance walking
tours in May!

Art Deco Walking Tour
Saturday, May 7th - 11AM
Meet at Angell Memorial Park in Post Office Square (intersection of Congress
and Milk Streets).

Though Boston is less well known for its Art Deco architecture than New York
and Miami, it can claim examples of Art Deco design that would rival New
York's finest. In our 90-minute walk led by Boston By Foot, we will see
examples of Art Deco architecture in government, business, theatre,
religious, and retail buildings from skyscrapers to four-story Deco jewel
boxes.

Stops include:
   * John W. McCormack Post Office and Courthouse
   * Verizon (New England Telephone) Building
   * Batterymarch Building (Hilton Hotel)
   * Western Union Building (now Hamilton Building)
   * United Shoe Machinery Building (now The Landmark)
   * Second National Bank (now an office building)
   * Paramount Theatre

"New Immigrants of the North End" Walking Tour
Wednesday, May 18th - 5:30PM
Meet at the corner of Hanover & Cross Streets on the Greenway, one block
from Haymarket MBTA Station.

Immigrants from Europe arrived in unprecedented numbers in the 1800s,
forever transforming Boston. People from Ireland, Lithuania, Poland, Russia,
and Italy, among others, settled in the North End. At that time there was no
indoor plumbing, few government assistance programs, and hardly any friendly
faces for these Catholic and Jewish newcomers.

Come explore some of the sites and stories of the Irish era of John F.
Fitzgerald; the Jews who lived near the local "Gates of Jerusalem;" and the
Italians who still hold sway in the North End led by historian and author
Alex Goldfeld (www.alexgoldfeld.com <http://www.alexgoldfeld.com/> ).

Both events are free for Alliance members and $10 for non-members. Space is
limited and tickets must be purchased in advance to reserve a spot.
