During a recent public hearing on the possible adverse effects regarding the redevelopment of the St. Joseph Church site in Salem, many people in attendance who felt strongly about the preservation of the site were thoroughly confused about the 106 process as stated in a recent The Salem News article. While I saw representatives from a couple of the local preservation groups at the hearing, I did not note the same level of support from the larger state-wide preservation groups. Any thoughts?

Many of the people speaking in favor of preservation were not familiar with preservation issues and struggled to refute points made by the other side which included the usual cliches for demolition like the need for new housing and the jobs that would be created from razing the church and building a new structure. One person even dismissed the International style as being ugly and therefore, not important.
