LOCAL PRESERVATION UPDATE E-NEWSLETTER

Published by the Massachusetts Historical Commission

SURVEY AND PLANNING GRANTS

The current round of Survey and Planning Grants is underway for the
communities of Boston, Brookline, Hadley, Leverett, Lowell, Medford,
Natick, New Bedford, Newton, Northfield, Salem and Waltham. As is
typical from year to year, the most popular project is the preparation
of MHC Historic Property Survey Forms by a professional preservation
consultant. However, there are other preservation projects such as the
city of Newton's update to their local historic district design
guidelines. These projects, which were awarded by MHC in the spring of
2011, will be completed over the coming 9 months. Applications for next
year's grants will be sent out soon with a notice in this e-newsletter.
Local historical commissions and historic district commissions should
consider applying for these matching 50/50 grants.

LOCAL HISTORIC DISTRICT SOLAR DESIGN GUIDELINES

The Massachusetts Historical Commission has compiled relevant material
on solar panels from local historic district design guidelines in
Massachusetts. Of the thirty-six design guidelines reviewed, the
communities of Andover, Bedford, Belmont, Concord, Dedham, Harwich,
Hingham, Hull, Lenox, Lowell, Nantucket, Plymouth, Salem, Somerville,
Wenham and West Tisbury all had guidelines for reviewing solar panels.
If you would like a copy of the compiled material as a PDF, please
contact Christopher.Skelly at state.ma.us.
