Amherst has talked about creating a plaque program for owners of
historic properties but not yet actually taken any steps in that direction.
In the meantime, then, we occasionally receive queries from residents
asking how they might best mark the historic character of their
structures (date, founder's name, etc.) with a plaque or other sign that
they themselves would acquire.
Do you have any recommendations about this with regard to practices,
forms, vendors?
Thanks,
Jim
Dear Jim, In Concord, MA, our "plaques" are focused on the year of
construction and the owner. This information appears on a painted white board
which is affixed to the house. For Instance, ours says, "The
Scotchford-Wheeler House, Built before 1653." The dimensions of the board, which is not a
perfect rectangle because of space for a painting of the Old North Bridge,
are 18 inches by about 7inches. These can easily be produced by someone in
your town. Rick Wheeler

Dear Timothy,
I suggest that you call our Planning and Land Management Department at
978 318 3290 and ask for the lady who supervises Historic properties. Rick

Good afternoon,
Easton's Historical Commission is preparing regulations for its local
historic district (the bylaw is already in place). We have a good number
of examples, but would like to hear from those of you with experience in
the administration of LHD regulations. Is there anything particularly
helpful to include in these; anything worth avoiding; any ideas of how
you have improved, or would like to improve the regulations in your
municipality?
Many thanks,
Tim Harrigan
