A recent report on the revitalization of downtown Beverly lists historic architecture as a significant strength and calls for the thoughtful reuse of historic properties. Despite this, the owner of a Second Empire Victorian across from our historic post office wants to tear his building down to expand a parking lot. This former mansion was used as a rooming house and the owner says he can no longer secure state funds to reopen it with on-site staff. He has tried to sell the 15-room building which is assessed at $800,000, but he has only been offered $350,000.

Beverly's Historic Commission has scheduled a public hearing on the proposed demolition of this important structure next Wednesday, March 28th at 7 p.m. at City Hall. Is there anyone on the listserv familiar with historic tax credits and / or the successful reuse of historic properties who would be willing to speak on behalf of preservation and offer the owner of this building an alternative to demolition? The owner states in the article, he is open to suggestions.
Sincerely,
Matt Pujo
