We built a tool for organizations to use to easily (and at no cost) post their historic preservation events and raise awareness in their local community and in other communities.
A few days ago we opened it up to other organizations following a six-month closed beta with Historic New England, the Bostonian Society, the Freedom Trail Foundation, the USS Constitution museum, and several local historical societies: The day we opened it up Old Sturbridge Village announced that they'd list their organization and events in the coming weeks, and each day more organizations sign up.
- Exclusively for historic sites and history-related events and exhibits, including preservation workshops, tours, and the like
- No cost to participate
- National in scope, with New England the initial focus
- Anyone---staff, interns, volunteers--can enter an organization's information
- Entering information is cut-and-paste simple
- Virtually unlimited space for text and pictures
- Built-in Add to Calendar and social sharing, including Twitter and Facebook
- One-page guide: http://bit.ly/MfUmnZ
Note: From time to time I've posted messages encouraging us to use the many free, easy-to-use Web-based tools to increase access to information and foster greater community involvement. What was missing was a publicity platform that would be scalable and reach the local community and beyond interested in our efforts. Given the budgets that many of us have, I knew it had to be free. And it had to be _extremely_ quick and easy to use. During the six months this was in development we received much useful feedback, which helped ensure that we had the right features and that the tool was easy to use. Many thanks to the organizations and individuals who participated.
If you have questions or suggestions, feel free to drop me a line.
If you know of others who responsible for history-related organizations, events, and exhibits, please pass this along to them or drop me a note and I'll follow up.
Best regards--
Lee
