Hello all,
As some may know, the ex-Northfield Mount Hermon 217 acre, 43 building
campus on the bluff near the Connecticut River and just outside the center
of Northfield has been offered free by its owners, Hobby Lobby, with intent
to gift it to a Christian organization or school. It was established in 1879
by evangelist Dwight L. Moody. The latest recipient has withdrawn citing the
costs of converting to a 5000 student university. A factor appears to be the
concern of the town of Northfield for a new owner who would be compatible
with the area. As many may know, the school campus is characterized by its
very fine historic buildings and scenic campus. Northfield center is
probably one of the Commonwealth's best historic main streets.
There must be institutions who would be a good fit for this property and the
town. Because of its connection to Moody the owners may be just as concerned
about sympathetic preservation of the institution as for the creed of a new
user. Please forward this information if you know of any possible
organizations. I don't have a contact other than the Town. I don't know if
there is any historic preservation designation for the property.
