The Salem Historical Commission has received an application to waive the
Demolition Delay Ordinance for the long-vacant Ropes Mansion barn on
Felt Street. It is a 2 story barn with cellar, with a foot-print of
approximately 22' x 27'. It appears to have been built some time after
1907 for the 1897 home. Free to anyone who wants to move it or rescue
some historical parts of it, but time is limited. The Salem Historical
Commission has been working on efforts to save it but it is possible
that they will reluctantly give the vote on Wednesday to allow its
demolition (but I expect the vote may be delayed until October 3rd).
The barn is the last remaining evidence that tells the story that this
was an important working farm. If you are interested, please contact
Jessica Herbert, Chair at 978-479-9325 or email me at jguy at salem.com.
